What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a short-term, trauma-focused therapy that uses a combination of eye movements and memory reconsolidation to help you resolve emotional and physiological distress. It’s based on modern neuroscience and incorporates elements of several therapies, including EMDR, cognitive behavioral therapy, and guided visualization—but with a unique, accelerated approach.

ART is best known for helping people reprocess traumatic memories without needing to verbally relive them, which can make it more tolerable for those with complex trauma or recent overwhelming events.

How ART Works

During an ART session, your therapist will guide you through a series of bilateral eye movements—similar to what your eyes do during REM sleep—while you briefly recall a distressing memory. These movements help your brain process the memory in a new way, reducing its emotional charge.

You’ll also engage in imagery rescripting, a technique that allows you to “replace” the distressing images in your mind with new, healing ones. For example, someone who witnessed a violent event may visualize themselves escaping safely or being supported in the aftermath. This isn’t denial or avoidance—it’s a way to help your brain rewrite the way it stores the memory so that it no longer triggers distress.

Most clients report a significant reduction in symptoms within 1 to 5 sessions.

What ART Can Help With

ART is highly effective for a wide range of issues—not just trauma. Research and clinical practice have shown strong outcomes for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), grief and loss, childhood trauma and neglect, depression, anxiety and panic attacks, guilt or shame, OCD symptoms or compulsive thoughts, performance anxiety and more. Whether your experience is recent or decades old, ART can help “unstick” the way it lives in your nervous system.

What to Expect in an ART Session

An ART session is different from a typical talk therapy session. Here’s what you can expect:

  • You stay in control. You don’t have to share every detail of your experience unless you want to. ART respects your boundaries while still helping your brain process what’s needed.
  • It’s structured and guided. Your therapist will walk you through each step: identifying the target memory or symptom, using eye movements to calm the nervous system, and guiding imagery rescripting.
  • It’s fast but not rushed. Most sessions are about 60 minutes long, and many clients feel relief after just one or two sessions. However, you’ll never be pushed to move faster than feels safe.
  • You’ll feel lighter. Clients often describe feeling like “a weight has been lifted” or like they can finally breathe again. You may also feel more emotionally neutral when you think about the memory that once felt overwhelming.

  • Comfortable, welcoming environment. Whether you’re visiting our Tampa office or meeting virtually, you’ll be met with warmth, safety, and respect.

ART vs. EMDR: What’s the Difference?

Both ART and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) use bilateral stimulation to help the brain process trauma, but they differ in a few key ways. ART usually requires 1-5 sessions, while EMDR is usually 8-12. ART is also much more structured and detail sharing is not required, whereas EMDR is much more open-ended and detail sharing is encouraged. Finally, ART actively minimizes emotional distress, where EMDR may temporarily increase emotional distress before resolution. If you’ve tried EMDR and found it overwhelming—or if you’re looking for a faster, more structured alternative—ART might be a better fit.

Is ART Right for You?

ART can be an excellent option if:

  • You’ve experienced trauma and want relief without getting stuck in painful retellings.
  • You’re high-functioning but still burdened by intrusive thoughts, anxiety, or guilt.
  • You’ve tried talk therapy but still feel “stuck.”
  • You want a more body-based or brain-based healing approach.

It may not be the best fit if you’re in active crisis or need ongoing support for a complex mental health condition—but even in those cases, ART can be integrated as part of your broader treatment plan.
